A cross-border competition that offers lucrative prize packages for the most innovative rural businesses has been officially launched.
The JFC Innovation Awards for Rural Businesses 2008 is open to rural and agricultural enterprises from across Ireland, and aims to reward the individuals and firms who have embraced innovation and introduced new ideas to the sector.
The contest is sponsored by JFC Manufacturing, the Department for Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) Northern Ireland, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority (TEAGASC), and the Irish Farmers’ Journal, with cash prizes and additional support packages up for grabs in the following categories:
Energy and manufacturing.
Value added and speciality food.
Service and rural tourism.
The overall winner will receive a prize package worth €5,000 in cash, along with €5,000 worth of mentoring and a further €5,000 of advertising space in the Irish Farmers’ Journal.
Each of the three category winners will receive a similar package worth a total of €3,000, with finalists scooping packages totalling €1,500. Highly commended entrants could also claim a share of business support and advertising.
Applications can be submitted in hard copy or electronically, and must include a business plan.
The deadline for entering this year’s contest is 12 December 2008. Shortlisted entrants will be asked to take part in an interview during February, with the winners revealed at a ceremony to be held on 10 March 2009.
